Shorthand Codes

To learn items that were somehow linked together in school we used mnemonic tricks such as “I before E, except after C” or this one for the planets “Mary’s Violet Eyes Makes John Stay Up Nights Pondering” (for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). You can still use this technique today for information and lists that you want to remember. Mnemonics can be fun, and they require very little effort.

Team Fitness Gurus: Creating Your Fitness Plan No. 3

Training like an athlete means that your exercise plan has the most basic element of fitness, which is consistent exercise. The human body thrives on movement, exercise, and socialization. Concerning the recommendations for consistent exercise the U.S. Surgeon General has established these guidelines:

Be physically active. It is recommended that Americans accumulate at least 30 minutes (adults) or 60 minutes (children) of moderate physical activity most days of the week. Even greater amounts of physical activity may be necessary for the prevention of weight gain, for weight loss, or for sustaining weight loss.

What is moderate training? Moderate training is considered to be 10% above the level that your body has already adapted concerning your present physical fitness level.

Team Leisure and Fun: Vacation!

from Ann Pencil
Director of Resident Services

I was fortunate enough to fulfill a life long dream last month by visiting and hiking the Grand Canyon . As a young girl, my dad and I shared a love of this beautiful place and unfortunately he passed away last November and never had the opportunity to see it, so I felt as though I was seeing it for both of us.

I have included several photos of the spots that I found breath taking as well as awe inspiring. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed taking them.

-The South Rim of the Grand Canyon must be seen in person to realize the enormity of this place. I had to keep reminding myself that Mother Nature herself created this spectacle that I was enjoying. I cannot describe it other than to say it is the most peaceful, tranquil place I have ever visited. One can walk right up to the edge and look straight down the wall of the canyon. Beauty at its best but not for the faint of heart. Hiking here was truly a walk to remember.

-Vaultee Arch, which is a magical place that one must hike to in order to truly appreciate the beauty that surrounds you.

-The Red Rocks of Sedona seemed to turn a deeper shade of red as the rays of a setting sun reflected off of them.

-I was truly surprised that in this high desert country I found flowers of all colors and shapes. Cactus flowers were beautiful and for admiring only.

- Slide Rock State Park brought out the daredevil in me as I climbed to the top of a 20 foot rock and jumped to the cool water below. So refreshing after spending the day hiking nearly 20 miles.

-The Church of the Red Rocks is built into the side of a mountain and must be seen to be believed. One gets an overwhelming feeling of contentment upon entering the doors to this simple, quaint church. I had to smile when I saw the sign planted next to the delicate flowers which read," please don't pick us we're smiling at God."

I so enjoyed this trip in which I had the opportunity to experience first hand the beauty of this wonderful nation we are so blessed to call home.

Wellness Moment: Mother Teresa and Life

Life

Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.

Life is beauty, admire it.

Life is bliss, taste it.

Life is a dream, realize it.

Life is a challenge, meet it.

Life is a duty, complete it.

Life is a game, play it.

Life is a promise, fulfill it.

Life is sorrow, overcome it.

Life is a song, sing it.

Life is a struggle, accept it.

Life is a tragedy, confront it.

Life is an adventure, dare it.

Life is luck, make it.

Life is too precious, do not destroy it.

Life is life, fight for it.

Mood Dependent Retrieval

Need extra cues to help yourself remember certain important events? Research has discovered that state-dependent retrieval cues may help you enhance your memory. For example, if a specific memory is fragmented, try to remember what you were feeling and what state-of-mind you were in at the time of the creation of the memory. Playing music or setting a similar tone or mood may also add to the staging of the memory retrieval.

Team Fitness Gurus: Creating Your Fitness Plan No. 2

The basics that any athlete will follow contains an exercise regime that is varied and that allows for growth concerning flexibility, and strength and endurance. Stereotyping is a concern for the athlete. Determining what each age group should be able to do from stereotypes is an athlete’s worst enemy. This attitude creates barriers for opportunities and developing physical fitness based on individual goals and abilities. The ages of 50, 60, 70, 80 and even 90 are not necessarily considered old anymore if we develop an athlete’s work and plan to remain vital.

"Walking is one of the easiest ways to get the exercise you need to stay healthy" (WebMd). Daily dog walks help to keep up your walking routine, and your pet is socialized with others, getting exercise, and of course your loving attention.
