Team Franciscan Center: Asian Arts!

Dear Dr. Jack: Is it Possible to Exercise too Much?

Dr. Jack Harless
Manger of the Franciscan Center

The answer, of course, is yes.  Generally you should give your body a day of rest in between exercise.  If you are diligent about alternating types of activity, it can be done every day.  This means, for example, cardio-vascular exercise on one day, weight training the next, long-distance walking on the following day, etc.  The most important thing is to listen to your body.  It will tell you if you’re overdoing it.  When you go from a mild productive muscle ache, to stabbing, sharp or burning pain, with energy levels dropping, you’re overdoing it.

Team Franciscan Center: Setting Goals!

Kristin Pitstick
Spa Manager

While the holidays offer us time to spend with family and friends, they tend to leave us a bit lethargic (not to mention a few pounds heavier!). Now is the perfect time to take an honest look at yourself, decide where you want to go, and set some goals to get there! For this month’s issue, I’m going to talk a little bit about massage and how it could benefit your exercise regime.
Muscles that get moderate to heavy exercise tend to become chronically tight compared to those that don’t. This tightness in turn causes a loss of flexibility which predisposes you to injuries. Poor blood flow due to muscle tightness also means pain and discomfort. Enter massage therapy. Some of the benefits for injury prevention and exercise include:
Increased range of motion and flexibility
Improved performance
Shortened recovery time
Increased supply of nutrients/oxygen to muscles.
Elimination of lactic acid (a by-product of muscle tissue during strenuous exercise)
Relief from muscle soreness and pain
Overall, I encourage you to make massage part of your wellness program. Not only will it help you perform better, it will make you feel better. Make 2013 the best year of your life!
The Franciscan Center Day Spa offers several different types of massage.  Please feel free to stop by the spa and take a look at our menu of services!  We are happy to answer any questions that you might have.  Or, call

Valentine’s day is around the corner, & February is Heart Healthy month.  There are many things that contribute to a healthy heart such as proper eating habits, plenty of physical activity, & avoiding toxic lifestyle choices & environments.
One overlooked area is our metaphorical heart & making sure that it stays healthy, & how this affects the physical organ & physiology.
According to Dr. Donald Epstein, a person’s quality of life is directly proportional to their connection to the world around them.  They are engaged with themselves & the larger world around them.
They know that it is impossible to be alone.  No one is an island unto themselves, & every choice they make effects not only them, but whatever & whoever they touch in the world.
These people have high wellness quotients because they have “large hearts”, metaphorically speaking.
As much as the objective indicators of health are important, recent research asserts that the subjective, internal state of the way that we look at the world is every bit as important to how much life we experience.  This is the core concept behind our Vital Life programs.  Socialization naturally & inevitably leads to wellness because we meet the people that help us grow  & evolve, even if it’s uncomfortable.  In a word, we are each other’s medicine.
So with Vital Life you are literally gaining both kinds of heart health.  Let’s keep moving in February & 2013!

The Road to Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a lot like trying to quit tobacco or drugs – it may take a lot of failures before we succeed. Until we reach the final moment of letting go, we must continually move toward it.

Forgiveness is something we do internally. It is a refusal to hate, resent or desire revenge. It is an act of the will, not a feeling. Once we understand God is not asking us to pardon someone when we forgive, we can work on forgiveness.

Virtual Team Brain Storm: Brain Teaser!

Good Morning:

Now that we are all (hopefully) back to normal routines after the busy holiday season, I thought I would start our brain teasers up again.  The following brain teaser is short & sweet!  Hopefully everyone will get it!  Good luck…the answer is below.

Once there was a night watchman who had been caught several times sleeping on the job. The boss issued the final warning. On the next night he was caught with his head on his hand and his elbows on the desk.
"Aha, I've caught you again," exclaimed the boss. The watchman's eyes popped open immediately and he knew what had happened. Being a quick thinking man, he said one word before looking up at the boss. The boss apologized profusely and went home. What was the one word?

Kelly Lance
Team Captain

Answer
The one word was "AMEN", thus making the Boss believe he was praying rather than sleeping.

The Quest for Emotional Wellness No. 20: Depression

There are many diseases and mental health issues that can contribute to depression in the elderly; in fact, depression is the most common disorder in people over 65. What is troubling about depression in people over 65 is that it can mimic the symptoms of dementia and individuals can easily be misdiagnosed and/or under-treated medically. In addition, when depression is a co-morbidity of dementia due to the psychosocial stress that occurs with dementia, the depression is often left untreated. It is important that depression is diagnosed correctly because most forms of depression can be treated and the symptoms relieve or even reversed. (American Psychiatric Association)

Team Advisory Board: What to Say When Your Plate is too Full...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR PLATE IS TOO FULL
WHAT E-TYPES SAY TO I-TYPES WHEN “NO” IS THE RIGHT ANSWER
It’s time for you sensitive Empathizer-type communicators to stop going along to get along with Instigator-type communicators, because when you go along, you’re more likely to fail at delivering positive results. The following directive statements may seem loud, brash, or pushy, but they are simply authentic, effective, and truthful.

Ways to just say no, so strong-willed I-types will understand, and no enemies are made:
#1. I’LL HAVE TO PULL AWAY FROM OTHER PROJECTS TO GET THIS DONE.
This is heard by I-types as a “reality check” and “taking the pulse” of what is wished for vs. what is feasible.

#2. ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT ME TO DO THIS IF OTHER THINGS FALL BEHIND?
This is heard by I-types as a challenge to re-check their thinking and priorities and to do a cost-benefit analysis.

#3. I THINK THAT’S TOO MUCH TO ASK OF ONE PERSON.
This is heard by I-types as a genuine statement of how much work is unfairly falling on the shoulders of one person. I-types know it’s not fair to assign all the work to a single workhorse in the organization.

#4. I’M FEELING LIKE I’M OUT HERE ALONE.
This is heard by I-types as a report that you are stretched to the limit and need to be emotionally honest without belly-aching.

#5. I NEED TO TELL YOU WHAT I NEED/EXPECT FROM YOU IN RETURN.
This is heard by I-types as a form of negotiation to iron out the details. It’s a form of record-keeping.

#6. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO IT ALL.
This is not heard as complaining by I-types but is instead perceived as a call for back-up.

#7. THE RIGHT ANSWER IS NO, BUT I DON’T KNOW IF I CAN SAY THAT.
I-types respect when you are right on the mark to take more self-responsibility for your own happiness and well-being.

#8. DON’T MAKE THINGS MORE COMPLICATED THAN THEY HAVE TO BE.
I-types hear this as a warning to keep the big picture in mind, not get cocky, and make small corrections in the flight course to arrive at the goal destination.

#9. YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.
This is heard by I-types as a direct confrontation that they are not up to speed or do not have the necessary information to make the proper decision. They will want to understand what’s wrong and not working right.

#10. I NEED HELP TO DO THIS.
This isn’t heard by I-types as a weakness, but as a warning that special conditions exist and need to be addressed to make the desired results and outcomes happen on timeline.

11. THIS MAY BE ROUGH AND THERE WILL LIKELY BE MISTAKES.
I-types like to be in control of the process. They don’t mind mistakes as much as they dislike being caught off guard by bad news that comes seemingly out of the blue.

#12. WHAT’S THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN?
This alerts I-types to expect trouble in this project, such as unexpected delays or difficult financial choices.

Speakeasy or Forever Hold Your Piece:
The year is 1925, and it’s going to be a fun night! You’ve just entered the hippest nightspot in Chicago, that Speakeasy known as the Gilded Gardenia! It’s a place where the refreshments are chilly and the band is hot.  Unfortunately, the club’s owner, famous Chicago gangster, Alshifton “Shifty” S. Capades, won’t be joining the festivities tonight, or any other night, for that matter.  In fact, you’ll find that Shifty is down for the count, and he won’t be
coming back up again.  He’s gone to meet his maker and it looks like someone sent him there with a one-way ticket.  Now it’s up to you to solve the murder of Shifty S. Capades!

Purchase your tickets today at The Franciscan Center or in Sister O’s room $15.00/person.  Please contact Anna-Bridgette Shorten for any questions at 436-6423.

Virtual Team Parkinson's Research: Silent Stroke Update

Dr. Jack Harless
Team Captain

Team Parkinson’s has 15 members.  This week we looked at a study showing that researchers at the university's Faculty of Life Sciences have now discovered that a small stroke, also known as a silent stroke, can cause Parkinson's disease. This is a proposed theory as to why healthy people develop Parkinson’s.  Their findings have been published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

It's Great in Dayton: The Awakening!

Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra presents The Awakening on
Thursday, January 10 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, January 12, 8 :00 p.m. at The Schuster Center. The sound of the horn weaves a magical thread throughout these wide-ranging pieces. From the opening call in Weber's opera overture to the plaintive summons of the Shofar (ram's horn) in Meira Warshauer'sTekeeyah, to the soaring fanfare embodying great American archetypes, such as the returning soldier, in Aaron Copland's Symphony No. 3, something about the horn reaches deep into our collective soul. The three versatile composers on this program explore this great musical asset in the widest variety of multi-hued orchestral compositions.
