Team Franciscan Center Spa Update!

Kristin Pitstick
Spa Manager

Winter is just about here and that means SNOW! I know, I shouldn’t utter the “S” word, but it’s important for us to prepare for the upcoming months. Here at the Franciscan Center, we are preparing with Paraffin Hand Treatments. They are excellent for helping with those aches and pains that inevitably come with Old Man Winter. Not sure what that is? PERFECT! I’m going to highlight it in this month’s issue.

The following information is taken from www.livestrong.com. A paraffin treatment uses warm oil-based wax to provide pain relief to hands, feet and sore joints and muscles. At the Franciscan Center, we primarily perform this on hands, but it can be done on the feet as well. Paraffin treatment is a form of deep heat therapy. The liquified wax is quite efficient at absorbing and retaining heat. In addition to its skin softening properties, a paraffin treatment will improve blood flow, increase range of motion for people with arthritis/bursitis or other chronic joint disorder, relax stiff muscles, and sooth pain.

Don’t let the cold weather ruin your winter! Bring a friend and stop by the Franciscan Center Day Spa to set up your appointment for a paraffin hand treatment, manicure, pedicure, or massage! While you’re here enjoy a dip in the pool, dinner and the Station House, and some socialization with great friends.

Projects that promote sensory and motor challenges also promote social decision-making. More importantly they are fun and a great way to make new friends!

Team Franciscan Center: December Update!

Dr. Jack Harless
Manager of The Franciscan Center

Happy Holidays to everyone! We are still rolling with SilverSneakers™ & Forever Fit.

Starting in January, we will be offering some new classes & more social gathering opportunities. The new classes are associated with SilverSneakers™ but are open to all members . They are:

Silver Splash—utilizing the physical properties of water to enhance agility, range of motion & cardiovascular conditioning.

Muscular Strength & Range of Motion—this class moves through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and skills required during activities for daily living (ADL). Hand held weights, elastic tubing and a ball are offered for resistance and a chair is used for seated and standing support.

Yoga Stretch-Stress Reduction— reduce stress by learning to breathe more effectively & efficiently as well as improving flexibility, balance & joint range of motion.

Cardio Circuit—Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a SilverSneakers™ ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography.

Exciting times are upon us at The Franciscan Center. There’s never been a better time to get back in shape or just reach new heights of fun & function with the addition of our new classes & social events!

Virtual Team Brain Storm: Brain Teaser!

It still doesn’t look much look or feel like Winter. Do you think we will have a White Christmas? I hope so!

This will be our last holiday brain teaser before Christmas. Let me know how you do! There are a few hints below the brain teaser if you need help.

My father gave me a brain teaser with two groups of words missing. The four words in each group are anagrams of each other. I've solved the first group, but I'm stuck on the second group. Can you help?

Time to decorate the Christmas tree! Putting up the lights was my job, but after that it was time to ENLIST some help. While the kids were busy adding TINSEL, I put on some music to LISTEN to; my favourite song is "SILENT Night".

After we finished decorating the Christmas tree, I hung the stockings on the __1__. Feeling a chill, I looked down and had to __2__ my __3__ lapse; the fire was out. I threw on my __4__ and stepped out into the cold night to gather some firewood. Upon my return, we were soon roasting chestnuts and sipping eggnog to complete a wonderful evening.
Hint

Here are definitions of the missing words:

1. a shelf above a fireplace

2. to express sorrow

3. relating to the mind

4. a cloak

ADVENT WEEKDAY

Sister Kateri Theriault

The New Testament begins with a bang: Matthew’s first sentence declares that the savior of Israel has arrived! No more waiting and wondering or chasing after vain hopes and disappointing deliverers. This Messiah has the right lineage (Abraham’s tribe, David’s house) and will be born in the proper town (Bethlehem). If you’re looking for wisdom, look no further than Jesus. Today the church begins praying the series of “O Antiphons” sung or recited since the seventh century during this final week of preparation for Christmas. Take Five will offer its own version of the Antiphon for each day, and so we pray: O Wisdom, give us the insight we need to choose your will in all things.

TODAY’S READINGS: Genesis 49:2, 8-10; Matthew 1:1-17 (193)

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

Reducing the Effects of Arthritis in Winter (December)

The old wives’ tale states that aching joints tell of a change in the weather. While little scientific evidence exists to support this, there are many things you can do to reduce the effects of arthritis this winter. Make sure to consult a doctor first!

1. Swim/soak in warm water— Swimming is great low-impact exercise too, just don’t venture into cold weather immediately after.

2. Exercise indoors—Don’t let your activities fall by the wayside as temperatures drop. Invest in a treadmill for your home or walk the local mall.

3. Make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin D—ask your doctor if you need a supplement in winter, when you’re less likely to get your recommended dose from the sun.

4. Try a glucosaminechondroitin supplement—this pricey herbal supplement hasn’t been proven, but many arthritis patients swear by it, and it has lower risky side effects than other medications.

5. Add 2,000-3,000mg of fish oil daily—The omega-3 fatty acids they contain reduce inflammation.
