St. Leonard Social Walking Program: Together We have Walked 188,930 Miles

We began our journey in Centerville, Ohio and traveled across the country to Disneyland California using old trails and walking paths. We have people at various stages of this walk and some are even making their way back to Centerville, Ohio to journey forward to Assisi, Italy to anticipate counting another 5524 miles into their social walking log.

All walking and steps are counted, such as walking during work, play, and leisure. Accumulated miles are estimated and turned into the master map planner to plot the points as various destinations on our map. All walking counts and we have had walkers turn in miles from: underwater treadmill walking, sandy beach walking, hill climbing, mall walking, chair stepping, NuStep Stepping, treadmill walking, bedside walking, walking with a walker, self-propelling with a wheelchair, and Tai Chi walking!!

The Franciscan Center Team: Cultivating Reverence

Submitted by Jack Harless The Franciscan Center Manager

This is the first in a series of blogs that will center around St. Leonard’s core values and how we may learn to cultivate those values in our daily lives

Reverence is the first core value of The Franciscan Center and is the foundation for our other values that we will be discussing in future blogs. Reverence is a heavy and heady concept most often associated with our reverence for God as it should be. We revere God for many reasons, because his nature is good, because of his saving grace, or because of the beauty of his creation.

What is less thought of and even less applied is the reverence due to a specific aspect of that creation; the human body because each one of us is created in the image and likeness of God. We take for granted the thousands of physiological processes within our bodies, moment to moment, day to day and year to year. There is a wisdom placed within our bodies that can turn peanut butter and jelly into new heart tissue, without us having to even give it a thought. This same wisdom silently runs the new born child’s physiology as adeptly as the Dr. of Anatomy and Physiology.

When I think of all the miraculous physical processes within us, not to mention in the larger creation around us, I am filled with awe and reverence for God’s wisdom. May we learn to cultivate a better awareness of our bodies so that we may serve as better stewards of his creation.

The Quest for Emotional Wellness No. 3: Moving Tips

The psychology of moving is an emerging new science. Research has found that moving can be an emotional burden at times, and it may cause fatigue, short-term depression, and withdrawal from favorite activities. The following are a few tips that may help to reduce the stress and strain of moving.
  • As you downsize, contact family and friends for cast off items, donate, or arrange for a profitable disposal of unwanted items
  • Keep treasured items if possible
  • Take pictures of items that are treasured but too big to take with you
  • Arrange your new home using memory placement techniques, such as grouping familiar items in a familiar fashion
  • Use way-finding lights in your new home until you are adjusted to your new surroundings

Team AAA Miami Valley Reporting: Safe Driving Tips

Good Vision Vital for Good Driving for Mature Drivers

By age 65 few people have perfect vision. Aging can decline the ability to judge the speed of oncoming vehicles, accurately judge distance and the ability to detect vehicles and pedestrians on or beside the road.

For safer driving mature drivers should consider avoiding driving after dark, in bad weather or in rush hour traffic. Also avoid driving when tired or stressed or when taking medication.

The safest mature drivers choose routes that are familiar, avoid making left turns when possible and take daytime “rehearsal” trips to unfamiliar locations they must reach after dark. Taking a defensive driving course is also a good idea. AAA Miami Valley

Team Fit-For-Driving No 4: Awareness!

Awareness makes us smarter and safer drivers! Being aware of the telltale signs of age-related signals that tell us to modify our driving behaviors is the first step. For example, some age-related signs of slowing down may be that you have difficulty distinguishing between colors or miss an occasional sign or signal. It may be that you feel that it is more difficult to judge gaps in traffic, or you may feel that other drivers are just too aggressive or in too big of a rush. You may also find it difficult to make sharp turns or come to a quick stop. There are many age-related signs of slowing down that may occur when driving, and these signals may be cause for concern. While you can be your own worst critic concerning your driving habits and behaviors, various evaluations by professionals can help you decide if you need adaptive equipment for driving, self-regulation concerning driving, or compensating practices and strategies to reduce the difficulty or exposure to unsafe driving situations.
