A Quest for Emotional Wellness No.17: Holiday Mood Swings

Consider either starting an exercise program or developing a strategy for staying on track with your fitness schedule during the holidays. Mood shifts and changes during the holidays, but one thing that can stay constant is the wonderful benefits of exercise for both your physical and emotional wellness. According to the Mayo Clinic exercise boosts feel-good brain chemicals, take your mind off of your worries, and warm the body, which are all calming and nurturing strategies to help the mind and body cope during stressful times...

Virtual Team Brain Storm: Brain Teasers!

It has been a few weeks since our last brain teaser, so I have 2 to make up for lost time! The first one is a “Trick Brain Teaser”. It might seem difficult at first and may fool you. Good Luck…

1) A man is sitting in a pub feeling rather poor. He sees the man next to him pull a wad of $50.00 bills out of his wallet.

He turns to the rich man and says to him,

"I have an amazing talent; I know almost every song that has ever existed."

The rich man laughs.

The poor man says, "I am willing to bet you all the money you have in your wallet that I can sing a genuine song with a lady's name of your choice in it."

The rich man laughs again and says, "OK, how about my daughter's name, Joanna Armstrong-Miller?"

The rich man goes home poor. The poor man goes home rich.

What song did he sing? Answer below.

The next brain teaser is a “Math Visualization” problem. Here you go…

2) Visualize a cube. You know it has 6 faces, 8 corners, and 12 edges. Now, imagine a knife slicing away each corner with a straight plane cut. How many total edges are there now?

Let us know how you did!

Kelly Lance
Team Captain

1.) "Happy Birthday". This song can be sung with anyone's name in it.

2) There are now 36 edges. The original 12 edges, plus 3 more for each of the 8 corners, making 36.

Have a great day!

Virtual Team Brain Storm: Trivia!

Good Morning Team Brain Storm:

This week, at one of our members’ requests, we have a few pieces of trivia. Good luck! Share with the team if you are able to solve them! The answers are below.

1) When NASA was considering animals to experiment on in space, they picked birds, because of the low maintenance. Although NASA was aware that most birds require gravity to swallow and would not survive the weightlessness of space, they did manage to find two types of bird that would survive the trip.

Which birds were they?

2) What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

Answers:

1) Doves and Pigeons.

Since most birds swallow water by tilting their heads back and using gravity to let the water run down their throats, they would dehydrate in space. Doves and Pigeons are the only birds that can drink without tilting their heads back.

2) Niagara Falls - The rim is worn down about 1 foot each year because of the hundreds of thousands of gallons of water that move over it every minute

Have a great week!

Virtual Team Parkinson's Research: Exercise with your Passion!

We are holding at 15 members.  This week we shared a blog article from the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation Blog about finding ways to rehab or exercise that center on the individuals passion.  The effectiveness of these modalities is often in direct proportion to the therapists ability to connect with the persons passion & incorporate into rehab & exercise

55+ Worker No. 10: Never be on Time!

Have you ever considered never being on time when it comes to your daily start time for work? Experts say that it is a good idea to arrive 15 minutes early to allow for walk in time, time for stowing your personal items, time for last minute personal needs, and for clocking in on time. If you conducted all of these activities after your scheduled clock in time this could add up to big losses for your employer. Just think if every employee took 15 minutes to actually start their job each day: this could amount to 25 hours of unproductive time per month for each employee! Considering actual wages, loss in customer service, and productivity over a period of a year, we are looking at considerable losses in income and customer satisfaction associated with this poor work habit. Want to be competitive in a time of high unemployment? Consider never being on time to work, but 15 minutes early.

Team Fit-for-Driving No. 19: The 3 Second Rule

In good weather, the 3 second rule is a tool to determine if you are following another vehicle too closely. To determine the right following distance, select a fixed object on the road ahead and when the vehicle ahead of you passes that object slowly count "one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand." If you reach the same object before you are finished counting you are following too close. Of course, this rule changes with inclement weather, heavy traffic, accidents and road repair, and unsafe conditions.

Team Spiritual Care: A Prayer for all Ages

Sister Kateri Theriault

Jesus held in the highest esteem the Jewish prayer known as the Shema, which exhorts believers to love God with all their heart. The Shema has survived thousands of years of Jewish exile, dispersion, and persecution and remains a bedrock of Jewish identity to this day. At the end of World War II, an esteemed rabbi traveled Europe to reclaim Jewish children who had been hidden during the Holocaust with non-Jewish families. He would loudly proclaim “Shema Yisrael” (“Hear, O Israel”—the first words of the prayer) at gatherings of children and then look at their faces to see which ones recognized it from their earliest memories of praying with their Jewish families. Pray these words with Christ and live them.

Team Fitness Gurus No 32: Taking Time Off When you have a Cold

Have you ever been on a roll with your fitness program and suddenly came down with a cold or other short-term illness? It is a tough decision to temporarily scale back, but the Mayo Clinic advises to let your body be your guide and to take a break if you feel miserable. If you are concerned that you may lose your motivation to get going again after a brief pause in programming, don’t worry, start slow and ramp up to your baseline using your previous successes as your motivation.

Team San Damiano: German American Club!

The area's oldest German-American club is the Dayton Liederkranz-Turner.  It was granted a charter as a singing club in 1890, and for over a hundred years has continued to keep alive the finest in traditional German customs and culture.  A few dancers from Liederkranz-Turner graciously volunteered to come for an afternoon of fun with the residents.  They named their attire and demonstrated a few dances and then invited some residents to join them in a traditional German dance.  Everyone had a wonderful time!~ Submitted by Sister Christine~

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

How can I lower my risk of breast cancer?

     •Control your weight and exercise.

•Know your family history of breast cancer. If you have a mother, sister, or daughter with breast
cancer, ask your doctor what is your risk of getting breast cancer and how you can lower your
        risk.

•Find out the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy.

•Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.

Can men get breast cancer?

Men can also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. For every 100 cases of breast cancer, less than 1 is in men.

St. Elizabeth Meditation and Social Garden: Fall Update!

Team Home and Garden: Social Garden Early Fall Update!

Team Advisory Board: Self-Esteem Rights to Live By

Dr. Dennis O'Grady
Wellness Advisory Committee Member

High self-esteem does not come naturally to most of us. It is a learned process, a habit requiring practice day after day. High self-esteem begins with a declaration that you deserve to change your defeatist thinking into self-control, self-competence, and self-acceptance.

High self-esteem is a gift only you can give yourself. It is learning to appreciate who you are, and where your special talents belong. It is learning to put those talents to good use and then giving yourself credit for the accomplishments.

Here are certain fundamental rights that go along with self-esteem. The building blocks of high self-esteem can be summed up in twelve rights that each human being has in common.

Reexamine these rights when you are dealing with difficult people or seemingly impossible situations. Use them to overcome negative emotions and to help you design new ways to fortify and protect your self-esteem.

Self-Esteem Rights

#1: I claim the right to nurture my strengths and unique talents.

#2: I claim the right to congratulate myself for small positive changes.

#3: I claim the right to love myself even when others react in disapproving ways.

#4: I claim the right to make choices which are good for me.

#5: I claim the right to improve my self-worth by setting goals.

#6: I claim the right to use good advice to grow.

#7: I claim the right to live my own life free of resentment.

#8: I claim the right to change myself when everything is going well.

#9: I claim the right to start pleasing myself more.

#10: I claim the right to take positive action in spite of fears that make me feel undesirable.

#11: I claim the right to use all my feelings constructively, including anger.

#12: I claim the right to have my changes noticed and applauded by loved ones

Team University of Dayton Engineering & Safety Lab No. 17: How hard are you Working?

The amount of effort you need to do an activity will depend on your fitness level, strength, and how active you’ve been. For example, walking a mile in 15 minutes will be a lot easier for someone who does it every day compared with someone who has never done it. You can use these informal guidelines to estimate how much effort you are putting into your endurance activities:

• Brisk walking is a moderate activity, while jogging is a vigorous activity.

• Talking is easy during moderate activity but difficult during vigorous activity.

• If you tend to sweat, you probably won’t sweat during light activity. You will sweat during vigorous or sustained moderate activity. Remember to drink fluids even if you don’t sweat.

One doctor who specializes in exercise for older adults tells her patients the following: “If you can’t talk while you’re exercising, it’s too difficult. If you can sing a song, it’s too easy

Blue Zone your Memory No. 36: Relationships

The link to perceived health, and improved memory, social functioning, and happiness among octogenarians appear to be based around the quality of relationships. Research from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that when older adults have quality relationships with others, they report less pain, have improved memory recall, and recover quicker from acute illness. This analysis was a comparison of those who are in unhealthy relationships or tend to self-isolate, to those who have healthy relationships. The researchers found that relationships with others help to buffer the stress, anxiety, and functional disability that often accompany acute illnesses. This study included the results from satisfying marital relationships and quality time spent with others.
