Blue Zone Your Memory No. 31: Doorways and Memory

Did you ever walk through a doorway or threshold and forget why you were entering that area of your home or office? This phenomenon is called “the location updating effect” In their research Radvansky, and Copeland (2011) found that passing through a doorway psychologically serves as an event boundary for the brain. Interestingly, this temporary memory loss is not age specific. Additionally, it was found that moving from one location to another temporary limits access to memory regardless of the memory aids used to remember the reason for the event. Researchers are working to find out why this occurs.
