Team Bramlish: Vital Life at Home

from Dave Bramlish: Wellness Advisory Member

I thought it would be a great idea to carry the knowledge I have been learning about Vital Life to my family. We have a large family with most over 50 years old. What I have done is break the ice by asking them if they are interested in an investment opportunity. I then describe that this requires no money. (silly but it catches attention to the fact that this is an investment in better life)
I have met with everyone, described the Wellness Spectrum and associated data, and have formed a calendar compiled by brainstorming ideas for activities. Some of the activities are as follows.

* Group trip to
Jungle Jim's to shop then have lunch in the parking lot
* Group breakfast. Everyone brings an item to share.
Theme music played to set mood (like
bluegrass or country.
* Regular group hiking to local trails
* Soon to host Vitamix smoothie day.(high power mixer) (everyone bring a fruit to add to different
smoothies)
* I am building a trailer mounted BBQ to host large family cooking events
* Hosting bread making events utilizing manual bread making methods and trying each recipes
* Working to set some type of volunteer activity to do as a group
* Game day-we break out board games or lawn games
* Regular family camping events at campgrounds and back yards
* Back yard camp fire

I am happy to see family interest and willingness to suggest activities and participation. I felt so strongly about Vital Life that I wanted to include my family. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to better my life and of those around me.

Spiritual Wellness Fun and Function Model

by Sister Christine Doerger

My wellness philosophy rests in my relationship with God and hopefully radiates to my neighbor and all of creation through loving, caring about and for, accepting and respecting all created things because they are a reflection of God. I believe each individual is special and priceless and deserving of my love. And I believe that this stems from a deep relationship with my Creator. My philosophy was developed from my loving parents and my religious community and my religious upbringing in my home and school. My parents were very caring individuals lovingly reaching out to others. And I learned so much from my Sister-teachers and my Sisters in Community—in my training and in living with the Sisters. And, most importantly, from God Himself through prayer. The dimension of wellness, therefore, that I have developed above the others is spirituality. The activities I do to support this is encouraging attendance at Mass and rosary, which is already on the calendar, but also I like to read touching stories which are spiritually-based showing kindness, forgiveness, love, faith and hope. Actually, I feel as though it's not so much what activities I do, but how I do them. I like to make everyone feel good about themselves and make them smile. I like to make activities enjoyable and exciting! All of this will hopefully reach the spiritual realm of each resident giving them meaning to their lives and bringing them peace, joy and calm.

Nutritional and Physical Wellness Fun and Function Model

Betty Greger enjoys eating healthy and exercising and she strives to reduce stress by accepting life as it comes. Her mother and grandmother were good examples of these life skills and they also were very good cooks.

Betty states that as an adult she always loved to cook. Betty adds, "before Bill and I were married I attended cooking classes at the Y. W. C. A." While Betty was recuperating from knee replacement surgery, she wrote a cookbook for the immediate family. To date, this cookbook has been published twenty times and is a wonderful gift to her family! Betty continues to seek education concerning her nutritional wellness and she feels that Ann Partlow, St. Leonard's Dietitian, has been a great mentor through the wonderful classes and workshops here at St Leonard.

Betty's advice for wellness and social satisfaction is follow "The Golder Rule" "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,"
