Blue Zone Your Memory No.43: Anger Management

It is important that when we are looking for ways to enhance our brain function that we also consider how our emotions impact the efficiency of the brain and memory recall. Last month we explored the benefits of joy for improving memories and reducing stress, and this month we will open the discussion for how anger can interrupt memory recall and increase stress. Researchers have investigated how anger interferes with the brain’s cue processing ability and how anger triggers the amygdala to hijack almost all of the most efficient regions of the brain for decision-making and impulse control. Certainly, anger management would be a good intervention or treatment plan to add when building a personal wellness program.

Team Franciscan Center: Tips for Seniors!

Jon Dolph Fitness Supervisor

Tips for seniors beginning an exercise program

Get clearance first – Before you begin, have a check-up and talk with your doctor or healthcare practitioner about any special conditions you might have. If something hurts, stop doing it -- If you have a persistent pain when you exercise, take a break. If you are sick, you should go easy or skip a few days. When you resume, start slowly again. Know that there are some warning signs that mean you should stop what you are doing and consult a doctor:

Chest pain or pressure

Breathing trouble or excessive shortness of breath

Persistent or sharp muscle or joint pain.

Nausea

Unusual balance difficulty

Severe illness

Start Slowly – Start with 10 minutes a couple times a day if you can. Go slow and be consistent.

Keep It Easy – Moderation is key, don’t overexert yourself.

Breathe – Remember to breathe consistently throughout your exercise.

Hydrate – Drink plenty of water before, during and after your activity.

Warm Up & Cool Down – Always ease your body into and out of exercise. Walk slowly or stretch for at least 5 minutes.

Build Up – Gradually increase the time and intensity of your activity. It will become easier as you exercise consistently.

Mix It Up – Vary the type of activity you do. Try a class like tai chi or yoga for variation. Doing new things will help you remain interested.

Team Wasson Music Center: Music and Art!

Team Wassun and Team Makofka came by SDR today. It went extremely well. The girls with Team Wasson played the piano and the residents attempted to copy a Monet! This was the first experience the residents had painting to LIVE music, and the first time I attempted to have them paint from looking at something, There was so much concentration on their faces, and they painted for almost an hour and a half until the painting was finished. ~Keith

Team Fitness Gurus No. 27: Posture for Chair Exercises

When participating in chair exercises, use a chair that does not have wheels, is comfortable, with a fairly flat seat, and sturdy back support. Good posture requires effort especially during chair exercises.  Being aware of your posture and adjusting as needed will help you to receive the most benefit out of your chair exercise class, and reduce the chance of injury. It is important to maintain good posture and balance throughout your chair exercise class, and rest as often as needed.  It is beneficial to have the feet on the ground, and knees should be level or slightly higher than the hips. The shoulders should be down, back, and relaxed. (Sit and Be Fit, 2003)

Team 5k: 5k and Socialization

As spring approaches, the weather becomes increasingly more beautiful and, with that, comes the reality of walking and exercising outside. This is a perfect opportunity to train for the upcoming 5K on June 9th this year! As an integral part of the Vital Life community, you and others can work towards completing a 5K together and reap the physical and social benefits! Walking in groups not only enhances the physical dimension of wellness, it is also highly beneficial to your social well-being if you walk in groups. If 3.1 miles sounds daunting, don’t fret, but instead, start small and take baby steps to reaching your goal. As motivation, submit your steps and miles to the social walking program on campus to see how far you can travel just by walking. Maybe you could make it all the way to Disneyland in Anaheim, CA before the 5k. You can begin walking 2-3 minutes a day until you work your way up to 3 miles. The number of sunny days is slowly increasing and so can your walking time. Get out there, grab your neighbor or a friend and start walking and enjoy the invigorating benefits while working towards a goal!

To register for the 5K, pick up a registration form at the Chaminade front desk, go to http://www.keysports.net/, or to http://www.stleonard.net/. Please contact Anna-Bridgette Graham, Event Coordinator, with any questions or comments.
