Team Franciscan Center: The 5k is Almost Here

Dr. Jack Harless

The 5K is almost here! If you haven't registered you have a month left to prepare & train.

You can choose to walk or run this event. Either way you will get great exercise & if you have a buddy to complete it with, the day is much more enjoyable. Invite a friend!

There will once again be medals given to the top three finishers in each category. The top three male & female overall will receive a prize. Last year we had many of those medals claimed by our very own St. Leonard residents!

We will once again host a 5K training seminar this month to help you get prepared for this event. This is an educational workshop for the novice as well as the seasoned walker/runner. We will cover topics such as what to expect at a 5K, how best to prepare physically as well as mentally, and for those of you who were here in years past, what strategies you can develop to increase your performance & decrease your time!

This workshop is con-ducted by our very own Anna-Bridgette Shorten. She has successfully completed three full marathons, including the prestigious Boston Marathon. Come learn from our resident ex-pert!

Team Events: 5K and Socialization!

Anna-Bridgette Shorten
As spring approaches, the weather becomes increasingly more beautiful and, with that, comes the reality of walking and exercising outside. This is a perfect opportunity to train for the upcoming 5K on June 8th this year! As an integral part of the Vital Life community, you and others can work towards completing a 5K together and reap the physical and social benefits! Walking in groups not only enhances the physical dimension of wellness, it is also highly beneficial to your social well-being if you walk in groups. If 3.1 miles sounds daunting, don’t fret, but instead, start small and take baby steps to reaching your goal. As motivation, submit your steps and miles to the social walking program on campus to see how far you can travel just by walking. You can begin walking 2-3 minutes a day until you work your way up to 3 miles. The number of sunny days is slowly increasing and so can your walking time. Get out there, grab your neighbor or a friend and start walking and enjoy the invigorating benefits while working towards a goal!

To register for the 5K, pick up a registration form at the Chaminade front desk, go to www.keysports.net, or to www.stleonard.net. Please contact Anna-Bridgette Shorten, Event Coordinator, with any questions or comments.

Team Franciscan Center: June Update!

Greetings & happy June to everyone! Our annual 5K walk/run on June 9th was a real hit. We had close to 350 runners/walkers and the weather was beautiful. Congratulations to TFC members Christina Addison and Mary Lu Flynn who won medals in their respective age groups. Way to go ladies!

At-a-Boys & Girls go to TFC members Liz Taylor , Donald Brinkman, John Vallo and Jeff & Joan Cutlip for finishing the race with great personal times. We’re proud of everyone who participated.

Another new and exciting development on the St. Leonard campus is our Life Trail exercise station across from TFC. This outdoor exercise equipment will have a total of seven stations when it is fully finished.

The Life Trial will allow you to perform such activities as squats, upper body cycling, stairs, overhead press, wobble board, PNF exercises for greater strength, stability, and improved posture, and many more.

Each station offers three exercise panels with at least one wheelchair accessible panel at each station.

Every station does have safety bars for those who feel more comfortable with support while they exercise. There are a total of 159 possible exercises that can be done with this equipment in the beauty of the great outdoors.

We will be having a Life Trail orientation class every Tues. morning at 8 a.m. through the month of July for those that are interested in finding out more about this wonderful addition to wellness on the beautiful St. Leonard campus.

Call TFC today to sign up for the Life Trail orientation class at 436-2203.

Happy Father’s Day to Dad’s everywhere!

Team Events: Thank You 5k Volunteers!

The 8th Annual St. Leonard Live Now, Age Later 5K Run/Walk was a huge success! The success of this event relied heavily on our supportive staff members and volunteers.  The volunteers provided a solid backbone for the operation of this event in areas such as registration, parking, course enthusiasm, water stops, and breakfast.  Our volunteers are dedicated to the St. Leonard core values of reverence, service, and stewardship and we are beyond thankful.  Our 5K volunteers donated their time, energy, enthusiasm, and talents to make this special event the best it could be! St. Leonard is forever grateful for our volunteers and thankful for their hard work behind the scenes at the 5K!
