Team Station House: Weekly Specials!

Team Franciscan Center: Fitness Supervisor Update!

Jon Dolph

According to the Mayo Clinic core strength training improves both balance and stability. Core strength training not only works the muscles in the hips, abdomen and back, it also trains them to all work and function together. It builds coordination between these muscles, which helps balance and stabilize the body. Interested in improving your core strength? Classes are offered at the Franciscan Center on Tuesday and Thursday in the water at 12:00PM!

Team Franciscan Center: Spa Update

Kristin Pitstick

With summer just beginning, now is a great time to give your skin a little more TLC. So before you grab a friend and set up for a BBQ, let’s talk a little bit about the skin and what massage can do to help.

Skin is the body’s largest organ. Yep, you read that right: skin is an organ. According to reference.com, an organ is defined as a group of cells that work together to perform a specific function in an organism. This most certainly qualifies the skin. Some of the skin’s jobs include protection, sensory response, maintenance of body temperature, and waste management. Kind of makes you look at your skin a little differently doesn’t it?

According to skincancer.org, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer over the course of a lifetime. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung, and colon combined. Yikes!

Massage does offer great benefits to help improve the function and vibrancy of skin. A few things massage can do is help re-moisturize and soften dry skin, increase the production of natural oils thus improving skin suppleness, encourage cell regeneration, help to improve skin color, and reduce superficial scar tissue. Isn’t your skin worth it? Give your skin a little “thank you” and stop by the Day Spa for a massage today.

The Franciscan Center Day Spa offers several different types of massage. Please feel free to stop by the spa and take a look at our menu of services! We are happy to answer any questions that you might have. Or, call us at 432-6540.

Team Franciscan Center: Update!

Dr. Jack Harless

There are some exciting firsts coming to TFC in June.

Many of you are aware that we are expanding our hours during the weekdays to 5:30 am-7pm, Mon. through Fri.

There are some new exciting evening class times as well on the June calendar.

Zumba Toning, is our newest addition to TFC. Zumba Toning is a muscular endurance plus cardiovascular class which can blast the calories and challenge your body in new ways.

If you love to Zumba, take it to the next level with Zumba Toning. Zumba Toning is from 6:30-7:30 pm, Mondays.

We will also offer an additional evening spinning class on Mondays from 6:00-6:30 pm.

One final reminder about the 5K that is rapidly approaching. It will occur on Sat. the 8th, here on the St. Leonard campus. See our blurb below for more details. It’s not too late too register.

Can’t run? No problem. Here’s an incentive to walk.

According to Dr. OZ, walking fends off the #1 killer: “Regular walkers have fewer heart attacks and strokes, have lower blood pressure, and have higher levels of healthy HDL cholesterol than couch sitters do. In one study of women, a regular walking program did just as much in the heart-protection department as more vigorous exercise did.” *

Team Franciscan Center: Why Get a Massage!

Kristin Pitstick Spa Manager

I get a lot of questions regarding massage and exercise. “Why should I get a massage? Isn’t exercise enough on its own? I don’t think it does that much.” New research is emerging to explain the “why’s” of getting a massage post exer-cise.

According to www.huffingtonpost.com, a new study published in Science Translational Medicine found that a short, 10 minute Swedish-style massage can reduce inflammation, which can aid in muscular recovery post workout. The study had 11 healthy young male participants work out to their max on a station-ary bike. Muscle tissue samples from the legs were taken pre and post workout. They also took a third sample after it had been subjected to a 10-minute massage. The results showed that the post-workout tissue samples from the massaged leg contained less NF-kB (a protein which plays a role in creating an inflammatory response to exercise). Massage also seemed to help the production of new mito-chondria (organelles that are crucial for muscle energy generation and adapta-tion to endurance exercise).

So, the next time you ask yourself “Is massage really beneficial for my training regime?” The answer should be a resounding “YES!”

Team Franciscan Center: Weight Training Benefits Confirmed!

Jon Dolph Fitness Room Supervisor

Weight training has shown to be beneficial across every age group, including seniors and even those with chronic illness. Some of the most noteworthy benefits include decreased fear of falling and diminished age-related declines in muscle mass, strength, and muscular power.
Resistance training can enhance muscle mass and function even in 90 year old subjects (McComas 2005). Individuals over the age of 90 have been shown to make significant strength gains on a weight training program (Fiataron et al. 1990). Furthermore, long term involvement in weight training appears to increases absolute strength capabilities and slow down strength loss.
Muscular power improved significantly in the elderly (average age of 77 years) when performing high velocity resistance training. The largest power improvements were seen on leg press exercise, performed with 60-70% of bodyweight. The power improvements were associated with significant improvements in walking ability.
Elderly (ages 67 to 97 years of age) who participated in a free weight program reported a decreased fear of falling in addition to increased functional performance (Brill, et. al. 1998).

Wellness Center Update: Pre-5k Workshops!

Dr. Jack Harless

We’ve turned the corner & are heading full steam ahead into spring!
Hopefully, warmer weather will be with us for good, & getting outdoors is on everyone’s mind, I’m sure.
I wanted to remind everyone that one of our best & most attended outdoor events is quickly approaching.
Our annual 5K walk/run will be this June 8th.  We have already begun to prepare for this event & some of you may want to try your hand (or feet) at this great community event.
We have scheduled two pre-5K workshops to help you get ready for this event.
These are educational workshops for the novice as well as the seasoned walker/runner.
We will cover topics such as what to expect at a 5K, how best to prepare physically as well as mentally, and for those of you who were here in years past, what strategies you can develop to increase your performance & decrease your time!
These workshops will be conducted by our very own AB Shorten.  She has successfully completed three full marathons, including the prestigious Boston Marathon.  Come learn from our resident expert!
