Team Spiritual Care: Ask and You Will Receive

Jesus said, “Ask and you will receive”. Matthew 7: 7

EVERYONE WHO ASKS WILL RECEIVE. In the Gospel reading we reflect on the words that gives us an open invitation into the heart of God. Jesus is inviting us to boldness when we pray. We are to expect answers. Will I be open this Lenten Season to Seek, Ask and Knock on the heart of God? Will I take the time to hear the voice say, “Come in, stay and rest with me”? The invitation is there. A transformation begins when we are open to the answers God may be sending our way. He knows our needs and desires.

Let us take time to simply ask God to come and fill our day with His presence. Thanking Him, knowing that God hears even a feeble whisper. Thank you God, for the answers we are not able to see. The Lord will complete the work that He has begun in me. Will I be open to this gift?

Team Franciscan Center: Feeding Our Brains with Movement

Dr. Jack Harless

Manager of The Franciscan Center

"Neuroscience has discovered that our brain's very design makes it sociable, inexorably drawn into an intimate brain-to-brain linkup whenever we engage with another person. That neural bridge lets us impact the brain—and so the body—of everyone we interact with, just as they do us." 1.

I find the above quote fascinating and exciting for a variety of reasons. It has many implications for us as humans, but specifically, those of us involved with very physical components of the eight Vital Life ecologies can understand that the brain is also impacted equally by the body.

Said differently, this is a two lane highway. Not only does what we think affect the body, but how we move, touch, and breath with our physical being, conversely affects the brain. There is no separation between the brain & body! In fact there really should be a term for this inseparable unity. Many have started to call it the bodymind.

This has far reaching affects and when one considers that exercise physiologists now consider movement to be a daily requirement, much like daily nutritional requirements, exercise becomes not an option, but a mandate!

Because we are not just physical beings, movement/exercise affects every aspect of our being. Researchers such as Candace Pert, PhD, have demonstrated that alteration to the body's basic patterns of movement, breath, & touch create pschyo-spiritual changes from the smallest chemical neuropeptide to whole body reductions of tension and stress that even extend to others around us!

Very simply, the more we move, the better we are as humans. We have more energy, we tend to resist stagnation & decay in all of the eight ecosystems. When we move with others, as we were created to do, we extend the holistic benefits exponentially!

If you have been feeling a little stagnant lately, try moving, breathing & stretching your body in a different way. When you get that feeling in the early afternoon, instead of reaching for the soda pop or extra cup of coffee, get up and take a 2 minute walk around the office. You're bodymind will thank you.

Fit-for-Driving No. 12: Staying Calm

Some driving experiences may leave you edgy or filled with raw emotions, but it is essential to stay calm, cool, and collected. Two beliefs that might be good to add to your driving philosophy are everyone has a right to the road, and hurrying will only make the trip seem longer (Berardelli). Basically this means that driving is a privilege and acquiring a servant heart while driving will help you to be mindful of safety and the needs of others. C. Parkinson developed Parkinson's Law that states "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion." Therefore, plan for enough time for your commute and take your core values with you when you travel.

Team Dance No 12: Rhumba!

To all dancers, here is the information I promised you about executing the patterns we are teaching in Rhumba. There are a total of 7.

The
routine will consist of rhumba box, gate break, turning basic, ladies underarm turn, parallel breaks, cucarracchi's and rocking

steps.

Last week we worked on gate break which starts on the man's left foot _____ side-together-forward and side-together-side then

finishes with a 1/4 turn to mans left as he does a back step-turn. The lady stays on man's right side as he turns the pattern to the left.

Remember ladies to stay on the man's right side----follow the turn of his shoulders and hips. Don't forget to Practice of better yet come to

our open dances in the the auditorium_____they will start in March and continue every other month thereafter.

See you at the dances, Dale Archer

55+ Worker No. 2: Relationships and Networks

The relationships and networks that the 55+ worker hold are important in today’s workplace. These networks can help build trust within industries, especially when the market segment is the growing baby boomer market. In addition, the 55+ worker can add innovation and stability into an intergenerational workplace, which also depends on knowledge and experience. The 55+ worker is a contender for the “war on talent” and the only other challenge is finding the right job to complement their growing healthy lifestyles.

Team Fitness Gurus No. 24:More Walking Benefits!

Recent research conducted at Yale University found that women who walk regularly have a 45% greater chance of survival after being diagnosed with breast cancer than those women who remain sedentary. Just 30 minutes of walking every day reveal tests with lower C-reactive protein (CRP) and Amyloid A (SAA), which are indicators of inflammation and other disease processes.

COMMUNICATION TURN-ONS

Drivers on the two-way communication highway avoid turning off good talk. Common barriers to effective communication which seminar members say you must steer around:

COMMUNICATION TURNOFFS

Emotions, emotional displays, drama

Too much talk without saying anything

Beating around the bush instead of getting to the point

Inaccurate information – too many feelings not enough facts

Bad outlook

Bad mood

Shooting the messenger

Saying one thing and doing another

Putting value on project, not people

Mistrust

Discourage telling truth

COMMUNICATION TURN-ONS

You want to create talk that is priceless? You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Try these talk shoes on for size:

Be rational

Ask directive questions

Listen with three ears

Ask for more facts and fewer feelings

Use a good outlook on life

Spread a good mood around when times are tough

Implement what the messenger advises

Do the new and record the results to logically find out what works

Put value equally on getting things done and on the people who get the things done

Build bridges of trust by being reliable

Encourage telling the truth…which sets you free

SOLVING PROBLEMS AND SEIZING OPPORTUNITIES

It’s all about communication. Everyone says so…everyone knows so. Every organization and family flies or flunks based on their effective use of communication skills and tools.

Team University of Dayton Engineering & Safety Lab No. 9: Falls

Have You Fallen in the Past Year? You’re not alone

As our age increases, so does our risk of falling. Do not think you are alone if you have fallen in the past year, about one third of people over 65 have. The causes of falls have a very wide range starting from poor lighting to balance disorders. There is no standard to classify these risk factors but they can be categorized into intrinsic or extrinsic risk factors.

Intrinsic risk factors encompass anything within the body. For example, blindness or lesser visual deficits, hip and knee weaknesses, weakened grip strength, or even functional and cognitive impairments. These types of risks are best discussed with your doctor.

Extrinsic factors include environmental issues like poor lighting, throw rugs, lack of safety equipment, smooth surfaced floors, or even the type of shoes you wear. Other extrinsic factors consist of taking pharmaceutical medications that have negative side effects.

These risk factors are different for each person’s case and if multiple factors are involved, the risk that you will fall increases. It has been shown that assistive devices like walkers or canes have helped prevent falls but they have not proven to be the sole reason of fall preventions. Thus it is important to be aware of all the risk factors that could affect you so you can prevent a fall. -Alex Brogan

Team Franciscan Center: Relaxation Massage!

Kristin Pitstick

Spa Manager

With 2012 in full swing, we at the Franciscan Center hope you are sticking to your resolutions. Having trouble? Here are a few good tips to help: set realistic goals, focus on one objective at a time, get a journal, share you goals with others, and reward yourself with a massage at the Day Spa! In this month’s issue, I will be talking about Relaxation massage.

As the name implies, Relaxation massage is a gentle massage where the primary goal is, you guessed it, relaxation. During a typical session, there is less emphasis placed on working out tense muscles and more on gentle gliding strokes to induce a peaceful state.

Although this is the least strenuous massage, there are still substantial benefits: improved blood circulation, stimulation of the lymphatic system, a calming effect on the nervous system, and an increased sense of well-being.

Let 2012 be the best year of your life -

Team Franciscan Center: Social Walking!

Dr. Jack Harless,

Manager of The Franciscan Center

What a winter we’ve had so far! Hopefully this warm weather will continue through February. When was the last time you can remember doing as many outdoor activities in January?

I know my family has taken more walks this past month than in any recent winter I can remember. Walking with friends and loved ones not only is good for you physically, but also helps tend to the emotional and spiritual aspects of our relationships.

Physiologists have long known that humans were not designed to be stationary. Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle makes it extremely easy to be sedentary, with disastrous consequences.

Our Vital Life Social Walking Program is one antidote to this sedentary menace! Find a friend or loved one to get active with. Not only does it pass the time, but it helps keep you motivated and consistent with your exercise program.

If you look around the St. Leonard campus you will find white walking tickets. Close by you will find mile estimation sheets which help you determine how much you are moving during the course of a month.

When you fill these sheets out and turn them in, this information gets entered into a computer database which allows you to plot your walking from St. Leonard to Disneyland in California and back. When you have completed that journey you then can move onto charting your way to Assisi, Italy and back

Our members and residents have found this to be a fun way to get motivated to walk, and more importantly, to stay motivated with their long-term exercise commitments. It also helps teach and implement a valuable lesson for life, which is goal setting. Exercise can be a very nebulous endeavor if you don't have specific goals. It can also be very hard to maintain over a long period of time if you aren't focused and secure in the reasons why you have chosen to set out on this exercise path.

Our Vital Life Social Walking Program helps you connect with your wellness goals in a real and tangible way. When you feel connected to your personal exercise goals your probability of achieving those goals rises exponentially! Further, the likelihood of you setting new and higher goals increases as well

So look around campus for the white Vital Life Social Walking tickets and begin your journey today!
