What a gorgeous sunny morning!  This week’s brain teaser is in honor of all the flowers that are starting to bloom on our beautiful campus.  I are going to test your green thumb & see if you can guess what the following flowers are!  Each of the clues make up a type of flower, for example "small container + to allow" would be "vial + let", or "violet."

Virtual Team Brain Storm: Brain Teaser!

I hope everyone is doing well!  Enjoy the warm weather while you can! Team Brain Storm has 18 members…let me know if you have a friend that would like to join!

This week’s Brain Teaser is called An Upside-Down Spotted Striped Box:  This is a Trick Brain Teaser…this type of teaser appears difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.

Follow these steps and see if you can figure this out.

1) Get a brown, cardboard box.
2) Get purple, orange, and turquoise paints.
3) Paint the box orange.
4) Paint on purple spots.
5) Paint on turquoise stripes.
7) Turn it upside down.
8) Lie on your side.

Good Morning:

Now that we are all (hopefully) back to normal routines after the busy holiday season, I thought I would start our brain teasers up again.  The following brain teaser is short & sweet!  Hopefully everyone will get it!  Good luck…the answer is below.

Once there was a night watchman who had been caught several times sleeping on the job. The boss issued the final warning. On the next night he was caught with his head on his hand and his elbows on the desk.
"Aha, I've caught you again," exclaimed the boss. The watchman's eyes popped open immediately and he knew what had happened. Being a quick thinking man, he said one word before looking up at the boss. The boss apologized profusely and went home. What was the one word?

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family & friends. Now that the Christmas season is upon us I thought I would do a series of Holiday Brain Teasers. We are at 18 members…please invite your friends & family to join us!

1) A man is sitting in a pub feeling rather poor. He sees the man next to him pull a wad of $50.00 bills out of his wallet.

He turns to the rich man and says to him,

The rich man laughs.

This week, Debra Stewart submitted research for us to look at titled “Negative Effects of Item Repetition”. From Debra: “Attention-likelihood theory assumes that different classes of stimuli, such as words that are high versus low in frequency within the English language, evoke differential amounts of attention at encoding, which translates into differences in the number of features that are examined and marked.”

Virtual Team Brain Storm Update: Monty Hall

Like many of you, I loved watching “Let’s Make a Deal” when Monty Hall hosted years ago.  What fun it was to cheer on the lucky, crazy dressed person that was chosen from the audience!  If you were like me, you sat in your own living room, yelling at the TV what you thought they should do! “Go with door 3!” Whenever the contestant chose the wrong door, we felt a sense of loss with them.

This study looks at what is known as “The Monty Hall Problem” (or three-door problem). In summary, this is what the  study found:  The Monty Hall Problem is a famous example of a “cognitive illusion,” often used to demonstrate people’s resistance and deficiency in dealing with uncertainty. The authors of this study formulated the problem using manipulations in 4 cognitive aspects, namely, natural frequencies, mental models, perspective change, and the less-is-more effect. These manipulations combined led to a significant increase in the proportion of correct answers given by participants. Until now, all experimental studies have had similar results: The vast majority of participants think that switching and staying are equally good alternatives and decide to stay.  This study found that switching is indeed better.

For our weekly Brain Teaser, I used the following question:

There are three houses built exactly the same. One is filled with cotton, the other with wood, and the third with iron. One day an arsonist sets them all on fire. The sound of sirens was growing louder at the scene. People were screaming. Which house did the ambulance try to put the fire out at first?  The answer was: Ambulances do not put out fires. 

This answer stumped everyone on the team that replied, except for Tim B., our massage therapist here at The Franciscan Center. Good job Tim!

For the week’s Brain Teaser, we looked at the following math problem…

Please add the following numbers in your head:

Start with 1000.

Add 40

Add 1000

Write down your answer.

Math Problem Answer: Many will get 5000. But the actual answer is 4100!

No one on Team Brain Storm that responded got the problem right. The numbers seem to add up fine until you get to that last 10, and your brain wants to add an extra 0 to the 10. Being the “numbers person” that I am, I even got out my calculator, sure that the problem was wrong. Myself, along with others, completed the problem until we got it right. You have to go slowly and be careful on the last number.
