Team Volunteers: WSU Students design and plant a St. Leonard container garden

Professor Letavec charges his MGT 773 (Project Planning, Evaluation, and Control) students with contacting a non-profit organization to complete a project that both the students and the non-profit agree upon.  These projects are to be completed within nine weeks by teams of seven or eight students.  The students who are near their MBA completion with a concentration in project management are required to evaluate, plan, and control the project utilizing industry standards.  Professor Letavec has approximately ten teams working in the community this quarter.

One of these teams that included; Alex Bohnert, Rebekah Fleck, Karleine Justice, Makenzie Resor, Jordan Jacobs, Jenifer Slone, and Angela Griner contacted Kate Quigley, Volunteer Supervisor, with St. Leonard in Centerville.  Kate provided the team with a container garden design and planting project and explained that the design needed the love of the team for the residence of St. Leonard to enjoy.  Residence rooms and activity areas look out on the courtyard so it was important that the garden provided a great view from every angle.

Project financing is not the responsibility of WSU or the students. Teams are permitted to seek donations to assist with project financing.  Grandma’s Garden in Waynesville provided a generous donation of 37 flowers. Paulette and her staff assisted the team in selecting flowers that met St. Leonard’s expectations.
Approximately eighty flowers were picked up by the students from Grandma’s Garden on Thursday, May 3rd and delivered to St. Leonard.  The team planted the flowers in seventeen containers on Saturday, May 5th.   This project brought a lot of joy to the St. Leonard residence and students.  St. Leonard has a great staff to work with and the team would encourage you to think about volunteering with St. Leonard.

Team Volunteers: Annual Recognition Event!

“Everyone can be great – because anyone can serve…You only need a heart full of grace; a soul generated by love.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

St. Leonard volunteers truly embody the spirit of this quote by giving of their time and talents to serve our residents. Many of the wonderful programs and services we offer would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteers. No matter your level of skill or commitment of time, we will seek to put your talents to use. -Kate Quigley Volunteer Supervisor

Team Assisted Care:Alter High School Students Join Exercise Class!

Volunteer freshmen students from Alter High School spent time at St. Leonard as a service project. One of the things they did was spend time with the Assisted Care residents during morning exercise and memorysize, which was spelling. The students, as well as the residents, enjoyed themselves tremendously. The residents were thrilled to have these young people come visit, interact and do an activity with them. They want them to come back.

Case Study 28

Social, Vocational, and Physical Wellness Fun and Function Model

Nancy Dafler learned about socialization in the 4-H program of her hometown. The goal of the 4-H program is to help young people develop leadership and life skills through exemplary citizenship and experienced-based programs. As Nancy grew up and raised her own family, she also became a 4-H leader and continued to help her children learn socialization skills. Nancy began her vocational wellness at an early age as she volunteered in high school, where she filled in for teachers when they were absent. Nancy was one of the first volunteers at St. Leonard. In fact, she sponsored the first craft class just for St. Leonard, which later developed into Kreative Korner. Sister Rose gave her $10.00 to start the program, and it has been self-sustaining every since.

Nancy believes in physical exercise and remembers walking with her husband and later with a friend. To be able to exercise on a regular basis it is essential to find a friend; its fun and the buddy system keeps you on track and motivated. To do this Nancy suggests, "Open yourself up to others, go out and meet people
