Environmental Wellness: Updating Old Systems!

St. Leonard's backflow-prevention system was recently updated. This is one of two such systems that have been constructed on campus. The first one was at the corner of Clyo and Centerville-Station. This one was in back of Wild Goose. The old systems (which were underground) were replaced due to age. These systems keep non-water debris from coming into the water lines. ~Submitted by Denise~

Team Doerger: Mini Vacation!

Sister Christine and friend visited historic Centerville, Indiana, the hub of Indiana's Antique Alley which was founded in 1814. It is also the home of Webb's Antique Mall, Wayne County Jail, and sheriff's residence of the 19th century, which is now a beautiful, comfortable library. And the home of Warm Glow Candle Fctory Outlet which displays the world's largest candle and has the most beautiful grounds with a pond of many large koi. It was so peaceful being in the midst of the water and fish! ~ Submitted by Sister Christine Doerger~

Team Spiritual Care: Vital Life Community

Submitted by Sister Kateri Theriault

In late September St. Leonard Franciscan Living Community will receive formal recognition as the first CCRC to achieve the status of being considered a Vital Life Community – a title we have carried proudly since early June of this year. Over a year in process, the program, headed and energized by Wellness Director, Debra Stewart has been a concerted effort by the executive director, leadership team, managers, supervisors, employees and residents of SL. Teams were formed to attend to and progress more deliberately in the eight dimensions of wellness.

What the program, Vital Life Community, challenged us to brought us to a deeper commitment to our Mission Statement: Responding to the Gospel of Jesus, SL assists seniors of all faith to achieve their highest level of independence. We are committed to offering a variety of programs that have the potential of keeping our residents independent for as long as possible. That could happen only if there was significant participation from residents and employees.

Over the past year plus, SL residents and employees have expanded their understanding of wellness as they engaged in a variety of activities addressing the eight dimensions of wellness. What can this mean for us down the line? It is the hope/expectation of our executive director and leadership team that we are a community of well-rounded, healthy, adults – both residents and employees. That we are a workplace where caregivers want to be and that we are able to retain employees and play a significant part in the reduction of health care costs for both residents and employees is the ultimate goal of SL. We have only just begun! May the momentum continue!

Team Caring Hearts: Race You to the Pool!

"Duck Days of Summer"-

The Healthcare center courtyard has recently become home to 11 baby ducks. Many residents, staff and guests have enjoyed watching them grow and helped to care for them in their temporary home. Daily fresh water, a clean pool and some cracked corn are a must! Their favorite part of the day is their morning shower when their pool is being cleaned. A special thanks to Beth Wint of the Wellness Department who has really been an excellent caretaker of our feathered friends. Our residents watch them all day from their windows or the gazebo. We will surely miss them when they are old enough to fly away. ~Submitted by Aileen Jones~

Fit-for-Driving No 5: The Right-of-Way

Driving defensively may mean giving away the right-of-way. The law does not necessarily give anyone the right-of-way it only informs us of who must yield and when. Other drivers may not follow the laws for yielding the right-of-way or even the rules of the road. In order to avoid a collision you may need to drive defensively by letting the other driver have the right-of-way, even though; the right-of-way may actually belong to you.

Make an appointment for a trim. It's important to get your hair trimmed or shaped every 5-6 weeks to remove the ends. Regular trimming will also extend the life of your perm and make it easier for you to style.

The Franciscan Center Team: Cultivating Service!

Dr. Jack Harless Manager of The Franciscan Center

Cultivating Service

Continuing with St. Leonard’s core values of Reverence, Service & Stewardship, I’d like to develop the concept of cultivating service from a somatic or body perspective.

Many of us know how to intellectually serve. We serve on committees, on boards; we may even serve a member of the family who has lost some critical functions in their lives.

Who mandates, however, that we serve? In other words, is service intrinsic creation or can we set it aside depending on the circumstances or our own desires?

I believe that service is not only mandated by God, but that it is literally imprinted into the structure and fabric of the physical universe.

As we look at the human body, it is made up of countless millions of cells, all working together to produce harmony, coordination, and function. It is the ultimate “family”, so to speak, because these cells all know each other, they are all biologically related, and they have different aspects, shapes, sizes, and functions very similar to our families, but on a much grander scale.

From a body or somatic perspective these cells very often must sublimate themselves, even to the point of their own death, to serve the greater needs of the organism. When cells do their own thing, without respect for what the body as whole needs, we call that cancer. The heart cell no matter how much it envies the brain neuronal cell cannot be or do anything other than what it was created to do. It cannot and should not overstep its functional boundaries, if it wants to fulfill its greatest purpose.

So, too, we are created with a specific task and function and we are efficient, purposeful and most able to serve when we understand our role in the context of the greater body of humanity.

Service is intrinsic in the human experience from the lowliest cell to the twirling infinitude of galaxies. May we learn to cultivate this practice of service, wherever it may be found in creation.

Team Tidwell: Nature Walk Discovery!

While taking a walk last night on the campus of St. Leonard from Moundview Ct. to the path to the garden, Harold and Cathy, noticed several pancake looking figures under a catalpa tree. They commented that they must be mushrooms.Upon closer look, they discovered that they were honeycombs probably knocked down from the Monday storm. Looking up in the tree was this swarm of honey bees getting ready for the night. It was refreshing to see them since they have been reported to be dying off in great numbers. First honey bees they have seen all year. This reminded Harold of the days when he was a kid, and friends, and acquaintances would advise his Dad where various swarms of bees were located. He would give them fifty cents and that night would set a hive under the hives and shake the bees into it hoping to catch the queen. Having many bee hives, Harold's dad was also the Mercer County bee inspector... ~Submitted by Cathy Tidwell~

The Quest for Emotional Wellness No. 4: Optimism!

Optimism is a trait that helps us believe in positive outcomes. Having a healthy sense of optimism helps people make sound decisions such as taking preventative measures against disease. Optimism fuels behaviors such as eating healthy or quitting smoking, because there is an expectation of positive results. Feeling hopeless and having a negative attitude accelerates many disease processes, especially atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke. If your personality does not include the optimism trait, do not fret, psychologists believe that optimism can be learned and skillfully honed into a healthy habit.

Team AAA Miami Valley Reporting No. 2: Choosing a Vehicle for a Mature Driver

Aging affects strength, flexibility, coordination and vision. We can’t control aging, but we do have the power to choose a vehicle that meets our needs. As a mature driver, you should choose a vehicle with options that add to your comfort and compensate for any loss of strength, flexibility or vision.

Although big vehicles don’t deliver the fuel economy of compacts, they often provide greater driver protection. They are also easier to get in and out of thanks to more head and leg room.

Also make sure you choose a vehicle with options that add to your comfort and compensate for any loss of strength and flexibility such as power steering, power adjustable seats, and power window and door locks.
